thats it game over, heading home

After Tom arrived back yesterday just in time to see the container doors being closed (good timing) yesterday was a romantic goodbye meal at the local Italian restaurant and then home to watch a very very long closing shinding on TV (glad we did not go, last year it was pretty boring as well!)

Then on to Lennin's bar, took bloody ages to get there as a lot of the services laid on for the non Chinese speakers have dissapeared so we drove around for about half an hour to get there, but it was worth it. A goodbye beer with a load of Team GBR out for the last night in Qingdao celebrating Saskia's birthday; but the highlight of the night was when Nick Rogers got up on stage to play the guitar with the house band and Chris sang a couple of numbers with him, watching Olympians bounce around a wet floor with ISAF officials and local Chinese really put it all in prosepective. The sailing has brought a very Western sport/culture to Qingdao and in the end the two cultures mixed it up big style.

Tom sets off on his long journey back to Australia this afternoon and Chris heads back to LA via Honkers at lunchtime, whilst Eileen is sticking around to make sure nobody tries to nick any containers.

Weybiza 2012-bring it on.

Jamie Cullen moments "What a difference a day makes"

I am now back on the same seat in the airport that I had yesterday. Weather looks OK for flying and I skipped the mega bun fight by having got my boarding pass yesterday. My only slight worry is that I will not see my bag in Qingdao, but it could be worse as I am now sporting a clean T-shirt!
Let's hope the next post comes from Qingdao...
TTFN

I board the plane, go down the runway, wait for an hour and then get off!

What a lovely way to spend 6 hours! board the plane, go down the runway, waited for 3hours and then go back to the terminal (great!). When I get back in to the terminal it goes like this:
• 200 Chinese passengers try and get to the front of the line first!
• Get told you now have to stay in Hong Kong for another night and your bag is checked in for the flight tomorrow!
• “but I need clothes and wash stuff if I am having to stay in Hong Kong” I say
• The answer I get is “Sorry, cannot”
• Then try and get a train with every other delayed flyer to central (no big deal)
• Arrive at central and try and get a taxi not easy! Unless you know you have to empty your wallet and bribe them!
• Arrive at same hotel that I left 7 hours ago….
Ace! I love Typhoon 9?

I am boarding.....

Have it! Looks like I might be flying as the flight is not yet delayed and is due to board in 20 mins. I love Dragonair as they have a total disregard for safety.

Two more images from the medal night

If I am stuck in Honkers I am going to post two images per hour until I leave. Might run out of images, so anyone has any good ones send them over!

Bugger - Typhoon 8 flag now up!

No trains, not yet confirmed about planes... Fingers crossed they will give it a go.

Tom in Typhoon 8 Hong Kong!

It's a good job I like HK airport! I have a high chance to be spending the day and night here thanks to a Typhoon.... I have risked it for a biscuit and got up early to arrive at the airport hoping I can return to my second home Qingdao! After all I do need to get the red trainers.
If I get delayed I am going to put the iphone on random shuffle!

Some pics from the night after the medal race...

Thanks John Luc!

John Luc has done a fantastic job at the Olympics and I thought it only right to show him some love.

It is hard to get a room key!

The medals have gone and the boats come back...

The medals are out, the sailors have finished and all the coaches are bringing the boats back for a massive game of Man up (for Chris and I).

Get it

Anna and Paul bring home Gold to the USA and GBR respectively in exciting light wind medal races. Everyone’s hearts go out to Rasmus from Sweden, lying in silver position going into the medal race but Paul sailed him into a bad starting position which was too hard to fight back from, so he dropped from second to sixth, not ideal. Murdoch of NZ said he doubted there would be any ‘afters’ in the bar this evening and said Rasmus could have done better on the start to keep away from Goodie, but c’est la vie!

Anna was the comeback queen in the Radial, going into the Medal race in Gold position she ended up at the first leeward mark in 8th position and then spotted a shift up the last upwind leg that took her to third at the windward mark and then second at the finish behind Gintare from LTU, who took silver medal, and it was a romantic feature seeing Robert Scheidt from Brazil sprinting through the boat park to greet her off the medal podium.

That’s it for another four years, in the end all sailors will agree that Paul has worked harder and been more focused than anyone else and deserves his Gold and Anna the golden girl of American sailing now is one of the most liked people in the fleet.

Now the hard work starts as Tom flies back to Honkers for a few days; but not before the entire fleet hits New York Bar at 10 pm for a white wine spritzer and a can of panda pop to bid farewell to their fellow sailors for a few months.

Dobbie: tonight is for you, we all miss you and wish you could have been here to help us load!

Victory Gold

Congrats Paul! See you in the bar @ 10....

Victory Silver!

Victory Bronze!

I say k, you say tv k....

Who made this Laser?

Victory Pictures 2 - More to come today...

Will there be wind?

All this excitment and the one thing on everyones mind: will Tom miss the medal race? if there is no wind then the medal races will be postponed until tomorrow and then Tom will miss the medal race.

Paul Goodison's not sure it would be good for the sport: 'having done the hard work of unloading the boats and fitting them out to miss the final day would not be ideal'

Aside from that Chris and Tom are yet to purchase their bright red Adidas Beijing trainers and China basketball shirts.

Victory Pictures 2 - More to come today...

Its over for some but not for all

Years of campaigning, travelling around the world focusing on one thing is over for all but 10 lucky males and 10 lucky females in the Laser and Laser Radial Class. Many people criticize the Medal Race but it does undoubtedly add extra tension and make the sport more marketable; and despite the tears of disappointment from many sailors (mostly the women) everyone will have bucked their ideas and will try and find a route to the water to watch the sailing tomorrow; a short course close to the land so thousands of Chinese people who don’t really understand what is going on can watch.

Many staff at Laser will have met some of the sailors, mostly the men, so here is an unofficial low down on the top ten ladies going into the medal race.
1. Anna Tunnicliffe: Married to crazy Brad Funk and originally from the north of England, lovely girl and can be seen on the blog doing the victory Vs that everyone was doing yesterday. Sponsored my Magic Marine and all together one of the nicest girls in sailing, I don’t think anyone would have a bad word to say if she walked away with Gold, also she has the most muscular physique in the fleet so you would not want to see her in a dark alley as she would probably kick your head in.
2. Gintare from Lithuania: Always smiling and very very good looking, going out with Robert Scheidt and has steadily improved from consistent top 20 finishes over the last three years to be sat here in second going into the last day; can she handle the pressure, we hope so and even if she does slip out of the medals she will do so with a lovely smile on her face as she always does
3. Lijia Xu: It would be fantastic for sailing and for Laser if she got a medal here, she is one of the few sailors on the Chinese Olympic team and is doing very well especially as light winds are not her bag normally
4. Sarah Blanck: Very quiet, sometimes sails at Tom’s club in Australia but a cool girl, she was on the winning team at the Skandia Docklands Invitational in the SB3, coached by former World Champion Michael Blackburn
5. Sarah Steyaert: Current Radial World Champion and has a lovely smile, doesn’t speak English all that much but everyone is looking forward to seeing her on the last night!
6. Evi from Belgium: can be a bit of a moaner, her coach is officially crazy but he does add something to the equation that you need at events, she was expected to get a medal and will be disappointed not to be in medal contention; but on the whole a good looking girl with a cracking smile, also sponsored by Magic Marine
7. Jo Aleh: I think she will medal in Weymouth, her coach Peter Fox is a great guy and she has had the weight of a nation on her shoulders since the beginning of the year; great technique and a joy to watch sailing, a former youth 420 world champion.
8. Nathalie Brugger: Got her tongue pierced, need we say anymore?
9. Katarzyna from Poland: Don’t sit on her boat, or she will kill you! Been sailing Radials for donkeys years, controversially she was against the boat becoming Olympic, wonder what she thinks now she is in the top ten at the Olympics!
10. Penny Clarke: A true professional, at the moment she is saying she is never going to sail a Laser again after this event but I think the lure of the games in her home country could pull her back.
Live the dream and we will get back to you all with news from tomorrows racing as soon as it happens!

A day in the rain in China

Everyone misses Dobby, aka Rob, but I am sure he would not have missed today on the water, it was very very wet!

sitting here watching Tom getting undressed to get into the shower is a beautiful end to a very wet day.

One thing we have realised is the cultural differences between the west and the east in boat repairs-in the western world we tend to look for a quick and easy fix to do it once and get it done in time; but Mr G. seems adament not to use any electricity (can you blame him, there were lakes of rain water around the power supply-health and safety ton of bricks!)and has only one tool that he uses for every repair-the famous scraper. Trying to encourage Mr G. to use electric tools was too hard especially when others were not keen on going out to buy the tools!

The Laser course was wet and windy, but not as wet and windy as other courses but it did bring a tear to everyones eye when the girls and Ben brought home two medals; and the 49ers had can what only be described as a 'crazy talk' medal race in conditions that they would not normally go out sailing in.

Tom has found a way to hide the fact that he has added a few pounds to his body (10kg since before he came back to the UK)- wearing lose fitting pink shirts!

look out for photos tomorrow to see if a. the weather is still bloody horrbible, b. to see if Tom is sporting a dress shirt on the water.

Tomorrows aim: to fix the boat that Brett Beyer holed by boucing the bow of his rib against the stern of his sailor's laser; and to try and get Tom's expensive phone that he has no clue how to use working again-evedently Musto coastal jackets are not too waterproof and Nokia's answer to a blackberry doesnt react well to water!

And now for the Money shot!

Ben just before getting his gold medal and practising his Victory!

Victory!

It appears that the Chinese love to do the victory sign in all photographs. This is a trend that appears to be spreading like wild fire! We have posted some for you reference...

Dobbie Departs!

6;45am and Rob (AKA Dobbie) leaves with a tear in his eye, back to the UK. We will continue to have Dobbie features as we are yet to tell the story from the Dobbie Olympic Sailing.

New Shape?

Friday Round Up

The day started with a forecast for breeze, but what is forecast and reality is often to totally different things. We are now settling into a routine which is as follows:
• Start with repairs
• Go on the water at 11am
• Watch the local helpers be sick
• Take the local helpers to the medical boat
• Return to the shore (as the racing is postponed)
• Carry out more repairs
This evening Rob was close to tears with emotion as we measured the boat of the winner of Race 4, the People’s Republic of Yorkshires very own Paul Goodison. Here we will list why for reasons other than sailing Paul deserves a medal here at the Games.

• He didn’t go to a public school
• He likes football
• He has ginger hair
• He occasionally likes a beer
• My mum thinks he is the nicest of my friends ever to stay over at my mums house in Wales.
We do not favor Team GBRs Goody purely because he is a Brit, we do have a number of other favourite sailors:
• Andrew Murdoch: A legend of a bloke who doesn’t seem to enjoy sailing yet does really well.
• Matias Del Solar: A South American smooth operator who was filmed on the opening day of racing wearing what can be only described as hot pants-only a South American could pull this off.
• Tom Slingsby: Not having the best of regattas here but has not let relative fame in the sailing world go to his head; and both his sisters are really fit. His dad was also one of the hardest working blokes at the 2008 Worlds in Terrigal.
• Susanna Romero, just google her and see a photo, think you will work it out from there.
• Gintare from Lithuania (surname is too hard to pronounce): Again a looker who is very friendly and courts a former legend of a Laser sailor from Brazil.
• Anna Tunnicliffe: She would probably be able to win in a fight against any of the Laser staff and is generally a very good fun person; also she has recently wed one of the funniest sailors in World Sailing called Brad Funk
Boring sailing information:

Goodie (GBR) is leading after four races, Beanie (aka Ben Ainslie) is leading going into the medal race in the Finn and the blonde trio from GBR are also leading going into their medal race.
Quote of the day
‘My man boobs are now bigger than most Asian girls breasts’-annom (its not Chris and its not Eileen-do the math)

What no sailing....

Olympic Report 14th August

The postponement flags have been flying all day and the racing was officially abandoned at the Beijing Olympic sailing venue in Qingdao this afternoon. There was early morning light rain and a mist which reduced visibility to just a few hundred metres. Until 12 noon there was not even enough wind to ruffle the flags along the Harbour sea-wall. Yesterday, Wednesday, the wind was light and only one race was held. The full rig winner was Andrew Campbell (USA) and the Radial race was won by Penny Clark (GBR)
Penny sailed the race with windward heal, kicker applied upwind with light sheeting. This caused much talk in the dinghy park as it has been used for several years. The team today had a relatively easy day with the usual complaints about bailers fitting, chip centerboard etc. The lack of racing did provide a good chance to network with ISAF and other groups. We are trying to arrange for a Laser to be rigged up by the medal stadium, but suspect BOGOC will not allow this.
The forecast for tomorrow is for wind so we will be having an early start!

Day Two, the AP flag rules

After yesterdays fun on the water today is proving less fun. Walking from one end of the competition village to the next saw Rob nearly collapse in a sweaty heap due to the humidity that he claims today is at around 130% but was realistically 80%. After finally getting from one end of the boat park to the other through the ‘mixed zone’ or as we call it the ‘mixer’ there was not a huge amount of activity in the boat park due to a relative lack of wind. Before the Lasers started Tom and Chris went to look at the viewing wall where you can watch course A; well that is if you can see the course area through the fog. Even though most Golf GTI drivers have their fog lights on 24/7 the extent of today’s visibility would require the most respectable ladies and gents to have their fog lights turned on.
Rob is currently trying to improve Anglo/French relations on the water with the chief measurer Jean-Luc, and we guess after 2 hours on the water of doing nothing they are ready to kill each other; but who is your money on, here we will do a brief synopsis on who will win in the inevitable fight between Jean-Luc, the most laid back man in China and Rob ‘Gutto’ Gutteridge, our very own warranty warrior.

Jean-Luc
JL is French. Therefore he may have a tendency to play dirty and shout romantic sounding insults at Rob en Francais; he will definitely reach for the spare batten set and start about poking Rob in the eye when his chips are down; but on the other hand he will have finesse that any man would love to have on his side. He will also have the added advantage of steering the rib, which means only he knows of any upcoming potential jolty movements on the horizon.

Gutto
Gutto may be a few years JL’s senior but he loves Laser and would die for the company, therefore there is no way he would go down without a battle. After nearly 8 years with Laser Rob knows the strengths and weaknesses of the various essential spare parts being carried on the water and will be in no doubt what damage a Harken Cleat plate complete could do in the right hands. Rob also has the backing of various sailors. Andrew Murdoch NZL, leading the Laser fleet after day one commented: ‘I remember that grey haired bloke from Austria at the World Sailing Games; I am surprised he has not retired or passed away eh, but he looks in great shape for an old man, I reckon he could bench like 180/190’

Verdict
Its too close to call; all we can hope for is the wind fills in, the fog clears and everyone starts racing then maybe there will be no Anglo/French battle on the measurement boat. Then and only then can everyone related to Laser sailing truly say that today’s winner has been sailing.

Breaking News: Both Team GBR and US Sailing teams are being ridiculed by the other nations coaches for having two coach boats on the course area and having the flashest uniforms; though the general consensus is that the Swiss look pretty stupid riding around the boat park on battery powered scooters. One coach who asked to remain anonymous said: ‘there’s not much points tracking windshifts out here so having two ribs to carry lunch for two sailors just adds to congestion on the water, maybe one of them should jump in with the BVI coach and give him a few pointers on driving; he is very bad!’

Day One laser and Radial Racing

Wind Speed: 5 knots
Day 4 of the Sailing in Qingdao was the first day of the Laser and Laser Radial Regatta. The day started with the AP flag being raised at 11am, which allowed for a steady stream of sailors to come and complain about centerboards and rudders bending in the heat. The Chinese Team must really be tuned into the weather as they turned up at 12. 1hr before the racing was scheduled to start. Our task for the day was simple:
1. Make sure all authorized repairs got completed on time
2. No one swapped equipment after measurement
3. Arrange for all repairs after racing to be completed prior to 9am on Wednesday.
Race One Std Rig
The racing eventually started at around 1:30 and Paul Goodison (UK) in his standard Laser was buried in mid pack for most of the race but managed to pick up some places on the final leg to finish 15th. American sailor Andrew Campbell finished one better in 14th. The race winner was Julio Alsogaray of Argentina (who finished 2nd in the Worlds in Australia) second Andrew Murdoch of New Zealand and third Matias del Solar of Chile. When speaking with Paul after the racing he said that “it is very annoying when you can do nothing but watch the rich get richer.”
After the first race the team had to check the measurement for the 2,4 and 6th placed finishers.
Race One Radial Rig
Evi Van Acker (Belgium) got off to a flyer in race one and lead from start to finish, followed home by Penny Clark from the UK and Gintare Volungevicute from Lithuania. Anna Tunicliffe from the USA was 4th.
Race Two Std Rig

The sailors had clearly got over their nerves in the second race and started pushing early on the port bias line. Much barging and colourful language was used until a general recall happened. The race officers didn’t mess around after this and went straight for the Black flag. Paul Goodison had a much better race in the second and demonstrated why he has won the last two events in Qindgao by finishing second behind Jean Baptiste Bernaz of France. This puts Paul in sixth place overall for the day. Laser race leader is Andrew Murdoch of New Zealand.

Race Two Radial Rigs
The second race of the radials saw many of the top sailors from the first race at the back of the fleet. Flore Cerutti (PAR) lead for the first lap closely followed by Sarah Steyaert (current world champ), Lijia Xu (China), Jo Aleh (NZ) and Anna Tunicliffe (USA). The girls finished in this order.

Overall Leading positions after day 4

Laser after 2 races

1. NZL - Andrew Murdoch 7 pts
2. ITA - Diana Daniela 9 pts
3. ARG - Julio Alsogaray 13 pts
4. POR - Gustavo Lima 13 pts

Interesting Day on the Water!

The Lasers had their first practice race today and we managed to get out on the water and have a brief look. I would love to say that it was dynamic racing, but I would be lying as it was more like a drifting race. Let’s hope that it is windier tomorrow! We are now beginning to see more and more sailors wanting their boats pimped up, but the sailors now have to complete two forms prior to any repairs.
The British sailors had a mixed day today. Ben in his Finn is now on top (no surprise!) and the Yngling Girls are still ahead. The windsurfers started today and the British girl is currently third. 470 and 49er sailors didn’t fare so well. The only upside is that Nathan from AUS is leading the 49ers.
We will hopefully workout what is wrong with the camera tomorrow and try and get some action pics.

Bike Towing

Good Start for the Brits

The Finns, Ynglings and 49ers all raced today and Team GBR are on the money. Ben has moved up into second, The Yngling Girls have increased their lead by 7 points and the 49ers are also leading after three races.
Practice Race for the Lasers tomorrow so we will be on the water with parts.

Now we can really see the people....

How many people want to watch the big screen?

Ding Ding goes the Ynglings

Sarah, Sarah and Pippa (UK) are the current leaders in the Yngling fleet with an impressive 2,3 scoreline. The first race didn't look that flash for Team GBR until they sailed around the outside of the fleet to take second. First place went to Krystal Weir (AUS) and her team.
Race 2: Didn't watch it!

Sailing gets underway

The sailing got underway today with a very slow start. Ben looked like he got off to a good start in the first race, but then the wind went, the tide kicked in and the fleet bunched up and stopped. I think he finished 10th.
Race 2:
Didn't watch it as there wasn't much breeze and really bad smog. In true Ben style he went and got a chicken dinner (was the winner) in the second race.

What happens if you have lost your pass...

What we had for dinner last night!

Yummy!

Ding- er- lings and Finns start tomorrow

The games officially open today and most of the sailors have headed off to Beijing for the opening ceremony. There are a few teams that are still around the dinghy park, such as the UK and Dutch teams, but activities around the base are minimal.
Rob and I have finally managed to fix all the sailors little requests such as sanding scratches out etc and are preparing for the start of the racing in a few days.
The Ding-er-lings (Ynglings) and Finns start racing tomorrow and the best quote I have heard so far comes from Sarah Ayton. I was asking her how much stuff she is doing with the BBC. “Tom - I am not here to become famous, I am here to win!”
The weather predictions for the first race for the ding- er- lings and Finns is max 11knots, hot and sunny. Let’s hope it arrives.
